In one of the more amusing turn of events in my life, I've been diagnosed with a gluten sensitivity. Let me tell you how dumbfounded this has left me. While it goes a long way towards explaining the eczema and possibly the migraine - which is great! - it also has me at a loss as to what to do. I'm told not adhering to a gluten free diet to this point will only make me worse. But then I think about my unused bags of King Arthur flour in the kitchen and my eyes start to well up. No more baking with real flour, no more microbrews, no more binges at the Montage with Michelle and Scott or at Shari's with Zoe, only select veggie burgers, aagh! But, to get rid of the migraines, the stomach cramps, the itchy blotchy skin, hell. Might be worth it.

So, for now, I'm diving in. I'll give it a month or so, and see how I feel. I may be able to find a happy medium, because right now I don't respond terribly the gluten (I don't think). But they can pry my Rogue Beer out of my cold, dead hands.

I heartily recommend you go completely without for a while, maybe even longer than a month. Once you've gotten all the nasty bits out of your system, you should be fine with having the occasional gluten-laden treat. You might have some "feedback" from your body about how it feels about that, but if you are willing to pay the price...well, sometimes it is worth it!

I have a fructose sensitivity, which is mostly fine as long as I keep my consumption levels low. No proper soda, limited bakery treats and candy - basically, anything with a lot of high-fructose corn syrup can set me off. It's not a huge hardship. The tough part is summer, when I sometimes overdose on fruit ;-) I just had blood taken to test for other allergies, because these days watching my fructose consumption isn't completely doing to trick.

BTW, Bob's Red Mill makes a TON of gluten-free mixes, and I'm pretty sure they carry/make gluten free flour as well. They have a mail-order catalog, or next time you're in Portland, come over to Milwaukie and check out their store!

Thanks, I appreciate the support! I have a bag of gluten-free flour from Bob's Red Mill that I just tried baking some brownies with, and I gotta say, I'm not totally sold yet. But I've also seen a few other mixes worth trying out - thanks for cluing me in on the Milwaukie store, I had no idea! I guess trying new mixes goes along with my ideas of experimental baking, no?

While you're in the metro area at the glutten free store, stop at the glutten free bakery in NW. http://www.newcascadiatraditional.com/index.html is their web address.

Sorry about all this. It's gotta be hard for ya...
